More About the Faculty
The Faculty of Social Sciences started as a Department of Social Sciences under the Faculty of Law and Humanities, at the inception of the University in 1984. By 1991, the Faculty came of age; and became a full-fledged Faculty of Social Sciences with four Departments, namely, Economics, Political Science, Sociology, and Geography. In 1991, the Faculty launched the Master’s degree in Public Administration and followed it up in 1994 with Master’s in Business Administration. The programme was the basis for the approval of the courses and the floating of the Faculty of Management Sciences, later on in 1999.
By October 2004, the Senate of the University approved the establishment of a Psychology Unit in the Department of Sociology, with the proviso that it would run for four (4) years, after which it would transit to a full Department, through the normal process and procedure. By 2007, the Department was weaned off Sociology Department and became a full-fledged Department by the following streams of students’ intake from 100 to 200 levels and by the end of the 2008/2009 academic year; the Department was set to graduate its first set of students.
Currently, all five (5) Departments run Bachelor’s Degree programmes. At this time the Departments of Geography and Planning, Sociology, and Economics run postgraduate programmes. Some of the programmes include Master of Science in Geography and Planning, Master of Philosophy and Doctor of Philosophy in Geography and Planning, Master of Philosophy and Doctor of Philosophy in Sociology and Master of Science in Economics. Also, the Department of Sociology runs professional programmes leading to the award of Postgraduate Diploma in Social Work and Masters in Social Work and Administration. The Department of Geography and Planning plays a significant role in the running of programmes in the Centre for Planning Studies, which include multi-disciplinary Postgraduate Diploma in Planning Studies and Master in Urban and Regional Planning.
The Faculty moved into her new building in January 2011. Offices have been allocated, all furniture requirements have been procured, and the problem of space constraints earlier experienced in the old building has been substantially reduced to the barest minimum. Members of staff are now accommodated in the new building. However, we look forward to additional office accommodations to address the needs of few other colleagues who are yet to be fully accommodated.
