HOD's Welcome Address

The task of social engineering is complex, and scientists in the field have always required extra tact and skills to tackle the myriad of problems confronted in society on daily basis. Universities take pride in the establishment of a Department of Sociology which houses experts with the tact and skills required to address such problems. 

At the inception of the University in 1984, the Faculty of Social Sciences started as a Department of Social Sciences under the Faculty of Law and Humanities. A full-fledged Faculty of Social Sciences was established in 1991 with four Departments at the inception, namely Economics, Geography, Political Science and Sociology.

The Sociology Department took off with the Bachelor Degree Programme (Full Time). The following programmes were subsequently introduced: Diploma in Industrial Relations and Personnel Management; Master of Social Work (MSW), the Diploma in Social Work and Administration, the Postgraduate Diploma in Social Work, the Diploma in Crime Management, Bachelor Degree Programme in Sociology (Part Time). Other programmes later introduced include; the Master of Science (M.Sc.), Master of Philosophy (M.Phil.), Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Sociology. Currently, new programmes, which have also been added include Postgraduate Diploma in Criminology and Security Studies (PDCSS), Master in Criminology and Security Studies (MCSS) and Doctor of Social Work (DSW).

The Department muted the idea of establishing Bachelor Degree Programme in Psychology as a unit. The Lagos State University Senate approved the establishment of a Psychology Unit in the Department of Sociology in October 2004 with the proviso that it would run for four (4) years before seeking to become a full-fledged department. A full-fledged Department of Psychology came into being in 2007 and graduated its first set of students in 2008/2009 academic session.

The Department of Sociology has at various periods been under the leadership of the following Eminent scholars: Mr. Niyi Balogun (1991 -1993), Dr. Segun Matanmi (1993 – 1994), and (1998 – 1999). Dr (Mrs) Stella Babalola (1994 – 1996), late Dr. Ademola Elias (1996 – 1998), Dr(Mrs) Olaide Adedokun (1999 – 2002),  Dr. Adebayo Fadeyi (2002 – 2003 & 2006 – 2007) and Dr. AdewoleAtere (2003 – 2005 & briefly in 2008). Others include Dr. Abideen A. Aderinto (2007 – 2008), Professor Lai Olurode (2008 – 2009), Dr Onipede Wusu (briefly in 2010 & 2014 – 2015), Dr. Elias Wahab (2010 – 2013 & 2015 – 2016), Dr Onipede Wusu (2016 - 18), Dr Olanrewaju Ajiboye (2018 – 2020), Professor Olabisi S. Yusuff ( 2020-2023) and Dr. oluranti SAMUEL (2023-).
