The unit of Botany and Microbiology was established in the maiden Department of Biochemical Sciences along with other units like Zoology, Chemistry, and Biochemistry in the University (LASU) in 1984. The Botany unit was then equipped with about four academic staff, relying on external lecturers to meet its academic needs in terms of teaching. In the 1989 academic session, the department of Biochemical Science was reorganized and renamed the Department of Botany and Microbiology (consisting of Units of Botany and Microbiology), Department of Fisheries and Zoology, and Department of Chemical Sciences (consisting of Biochemistry and Chemistry Units).
The Department has since grown both in the intake of students and the number of highly qualified academic staff. The number of technical staff has since also increased. The rapid growth of the various units that made up the initial four departments in the faculty, coupled with an increase in both staff and students’ strength, led to the eventual departmentalization of each of the eight existing units into departments by the beginning of the 2000/2001 academic session. Thus, the former unit of Botany is now a full-fledged department.
The Department is now better equipped, and has to its usage: one big multi-purpose laboratory, a herbarium (LSH), and a botanical nursery and garden. The department is fast-growing and may soon secure its own specialized laboratories.
