Research Interest

Topic: ARABIC LINGUISTICS DIALECTOLOGY

Description: The purpose of this research is to provide an assessment of the field of Arabic linguistics as it stands today focusing on issues, topics and approaches that appear to be dominant in the field. Where possible, the research will point to recent development in the field and the directions in which it appears to be heading. It is hoped that the research will familiarize the Arabic linguists and other readers in general with the issues involved and provide them with a perspective on the field.During the exploratory study, we shall rely on other recent state of the art researches specifically Eid 2012 , Eisele 2010 , Deher 2009 , Yaqub 2012 and Sanni 1992 . These papers are devoted to Arabic theoretical linguistics, Arabic dialectology, Arabic sociolinguistics, Arabic lexicography and Arabic grammar. The research will not be limited to the areas covered in these five papers cited above, other materials necessary for this purpose but not cited, will also be explored. The research will be divided into two major sections. The first will provide the background information about the scope of field and addresses the question of what Arabic linguistics is. The second section will be devoted to works done in the various subfield of Arabic linguistics, highlighting major contribution as well as recent trends and development in the field. In presenting this overview, we shall also point to areas in Arabic linguistics where little work has been done and where future research will be fruitful.

ARABIC/ISLAMIC COLLECTIONS IN THE LAGOS STATE UNIVERSITY LIBRARY: A STATISTICAL DATA ANALYSIS

Research Details

The facts of life indicate that all the Arabic institutions of higher learning are facing, at the present moment, an increasing upsurge in their materials and non-material culture. In the existing state of flux both the old and new elements in all the walks of life are fermenting. The library is emerging as a social institution with an acknowledged message and function in the school and the university in urban and rural community and in research and industry. The challenge is there and librarianship in the Nigerian universities has to develop its tools and technique in order to meet properly the increasing demand. Collection and development of any library is the basic foundation of the library services. Library has to select and acquire the suitable materials for the needs of its users, keeping in view the quality of the material. Collection development varies from library to library according to its readership. Type of library is also important while selecting the materials of the library. In the literature the collection within library has been given two major terms; collection management and collection development. Consistent definitions have not been applied to these terms, so that they overlap with one another. Atkinson 2008 , for example, defines collection development as those activities revolving around selection of materials. Furthermore, he defines collection management broadly as the activities that add value to selected items once they are in the library.
