FAMILY PLANNING UPTAKE IN RURAL AND URBAN COMMUNITIES OF LAGOS: IMPLICATIONS FOR FERTILITY AND MATERNAL HEALTH
The study compares family planning patterns, incentives and disincentives for the uptake of family planning services and the implications for fertility level and maternal health in rural and urban communities of Lagos Nigeria.
This project leverages on existing health facilities in the communities
selected. Data gathered on
family planning would be useful for micro-planning and scalable
programmatic interventions to strengthen the uptake of family planning services
in Lagos, which could be replicated in other states of the Federation.
The study area is Lagos State and the study design is a descriptive community-based comparative survey using a mixed methods approach leveraging on both quantitative and qualitative data collection techniques. The study population consists of women within the reproductive age group (15-49) years, their spouses and family planning health care providers (doctors and nurses). For the household survey, a multistage sampling technique was used for data collection. A total of 6 Local Government Areas (LGAs) were selected from the 20 LGAs of Lagos State (2 LGAs per zone) using the simple random sampling method by balloting, and these are Badagry and Epe (rural), and Alimosho, Ajeromi, Lagos Island and Mushin from the urban LGAs. Participants for the focus group discussions were selected purposively (8-12 participants per group). Data is being analysed using the Statistical Package for Social sciences and NVivo™ for quantitative and qualitative data respectively. Ethical clearance, permission to conduct the study and written informed consent were obtained from the appropriate quarters, and quality assurance practices were incorporated in all phases of the study.
