EDUCATION
Elias Wahab, B.Sc.(Hons) (LASU); M.Sc. (Ibadan); Ph.D (Ibadan); LL.B (Hons)(LASU) is a Professor in the Department of Sociology at the Lagos State University, Nigeria. The young Wahab started his academic pursuits at the Salvation Army Primary School, Dopemu, Agege, Lagos State between 1976 to 1982; Secondary Education at the Anwar-Ul-Islam College, Agege, Lagos State (1982-1987); Advanced Level education (HSC) at Anwar-Ul-Islam College, Agege, Lagos State (1987-1989), where he became the Senior Prefect, all in Lagos State, Nigeria. He gained admission into the Institute of Management and Technology, Enugu (IMT) to study Insurance in 1990 but left the course midway after obtaining admission into Lagos State University in 1991 to study Sociology and graduated with prizes in 1995. He had his Master’s Degree in Sociology from the Department of Sociology, University of Ibadan, where he topped his class and was given direct admission for his Ph.D. He had completed his Masters Degree with supports from LASU and Ford Foundation in 1999. He completed his Ph.D Degree in Sociology in April, 2005 in the Department of Sociology, University of Ibadan with specialization in Demography and population studies with support from Ford Foundation. He later had his LL.B Degree in Law from the Faculty of Law, LASU in 2007, where he was also the top of his class.
CAREER
Professor Wahab, upon the completion of his first Degree in LASU was retained to serve (NYSC) in 1996 and became a full Professor in 2014. Professor Wahab also served and chaired various committees of the Department of Sociology, Faculty of Social Sciences, the University University senate, Lagos State indigeneship verification among others too numerous to mention.
He was once the Deputy Director, LASU Foundation Programme, Badagry (2014-2017). At the LF, he was practically in charge of day to day running of the programme. While there, he was sought after by his colleagues in the Faculty to come and head it. He thereafter contested for the Deanship of the Faculty and was returned unopposed ( 2017-2019), thereby making him the first LASU alumnus to become Dean of a faculty/school/college in LASU. He was the Chairman, LASU Admission Screening and Clearance Committee ( position held since 2017 to 2022) and a former Chairman, University Admission Committee (2022); member, University Appointment and Promotion Committee. He was again reelected unopposed for a second term as Dean, Faculty of Social Sciences, (2019 till August 26th, 2020). He was elected by the Senate of the Lagos State University as the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic) on the 26th of August, 2020 to 25th August 2022.
He is currently a Visiting Senior Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) Research Fellow at the level of Professorial Fellow at the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies, Kuru, Jos, (NIPSS) Nigeria, where he is also a directing staff of group seven of course 46.
SERVICE TO THE COMMUNITY
Outside his immediate work and administrative responsibilities, Professor Wahab has provided leadership in different capacities at the Union, State, Federal and International levels. He was the Senior Prefect, Anwar-ul Islam College, Agege, Lagos, 1988/1989; General Secretary, Lagos State University Students union Government (1993); President, Nigerian Sociological and Anthropological Students Association (1995); President in council, Social Science students Association (1994); Secretary, Academic Staff of Nigerian Universities, ASUU- LASU branch (2005-2011); Principal Researcher, Lagos state Government Profiling Disability Research in Lagos State (2018-2019); Member, Federal Government of Nigeria Research team on Grievance Redress Mechanism(GRM) (2019-2020); World Bank and French Government Research Consultant on Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) Research (2019-2020); Principal Researcher, Disability inclusiveness sponsored by the Ford Foundation among others and recently, Principal Researcher, Ford Foundation sponsored Africa Polling Institute (API) Social Cohesion and Polarization in Nigeria Project (2024-2025). Professor Wahab is an external examiner to some Nigerian and Foreign Universities.
RESEARCH
Professor Wahab research efforts has produced about one hundred and ten (110) publications in local and reputable international outlets which in the last twenty-eight years has focused on Demography, Population Aging, Sociological Theory, Well Being and Reproductive health and rights. He is the third LASU Alumnus to present his inaugural lecture in LASU and LASU 60th inaugural lecturer; first Faculty of Social Sciences (LASU) Annual seminar series lecturer as well as sixth LASU Sociology Distinguished lecture presenter. In addition to his extensive publications in peer reviewed journals, he has co-edited six books majorly with his research partners in India. He has delivered over 50 conference papers in more than 15 countries (Senegal, Tanzania, Ethiopia, Burkina Faso, Kenya, South Africa, Uganda, Malawi, Saudi Arabia, United Kingdom, United States of America, Rwanda, Morocco, South Korea, Brazil, China).
AWARDS, FELLOWSHIP&ACADEMIC DISTINCTIONS
Professor Wahab is a member of several academic and professional bodies such as the International Union for the Scientific Study of Population (IUSSP), Union of African Population Studies (UAPS), Nigerian Anthropological & Sociological Association (NASA), Social Sciences Council of Nigeria (SSCN), International Sociological Association (ISA), American Sociological Association (ASA), International Society for Urban Health (ISUH), Population Association of America (PAA), Asian Population Association (APA) among others. And a nominee of a number of International institutions: Commonwealth Scholarship Nominee, 2000; Fulbright Fellowship Nominee, 2008 among others. He has also been honoured with several awards such as the 1994 LASU Vice-Chancellor’s Award for Excellent Leadership as well as the Sociology Department Award for the most Outstanding Lecturer for the some years among others. Professor Wahab has the following academic distinctions: LASU Sociology Department Prize, 1995; Faculty of Social Sciences Scholarship, 2005; University Scholarship, 2005; Ford Foundation PhD Scholarship, 2005; Ford Foundation Sponsored API Research grant on Nigeria Disability Research Project; SDGs 2024 Senior Research Fellowship; Adjunct Professor, Department of peace and conflict studies, National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) (2022 till date); Visiting Scholar, Institute for Population Ageing, University of Oxford, UK 2023 among others. He also received the Associate membership award and Fellowship award of Ikorodu Development Association (IKODASS) in 2012 and 2021 respectively.
PERSONAL LIFE
Professor Elias Olukorede Wahab hails from Ikorodu central, Ikorodu Local Government area of Lagos State. He was born on the 28th July, 1970 into the family of Alhaji and Alhaja Elesho Wahab (both late). He is happily married to Mrs. Mariam Wahab and bless with children.
