Current Research

BIOMONITORING OF AIR POLLUTION IN LAGOS STATE USING STANDARD MOSS-BAGS

Research Details

Air pollution is a major environmental and health concern, affecting ecosystems, biodiversity, and human life. This study assesses the atmospheric deposition of heavy metals in Lagos State, Nigeria, using moss-bags as biomonitors. Twenty sites across five divisions Ikorodu, Badagry, Ikeja, Lagos Island, and Epe will represent a range of industrial, residential, agricultural, and traffic-heavy areas. A multistage sampling technique will ensure diverse site coverage. Moss samples will be collected from an unpolluted site with similar climate conditions. The moss will be washed, air-dried, and treated with 30 percent nitric acid at intervals of 6, 12, 18, and 24 hours to enhance metal absorption. One gram of moss will be enclosed in 10 by 10 cm acid-washed net bags. These bags will be exposed 1.8 meters above the ground for nine weeks in both dry and rainy seasons. After exposure, the moss will be dried, homogenized, and digested using nitric and perchloric acids. Heavy metals and metalloids will be analyzed using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry, while mercury will be analyzed using elemental analysis. Standard reference materials and analytical blanks will ensure data accuracy. Descriptive statistics and enrichment factor calculations will be used to assess pollution levels and distinguish between natural and human-related sources. The study aims to validate moss-bags as effective, low-cost tools for air quality monitoring and to provide data that can support environmental policy in Lagos State.
