Topic: THE POWER OF DIALOGUE: THE IMPACT OF STUDENTS’ CONTRIBUTIONS ON LEARNING OUTCOMES IN RECIPROCAL MATHEMATICS CLASSROOM
Description:
Active participation in mathematics classroom fosters students’ engagement and ownership of learning, yet limited research has examined how students’ contributions shape achievement in specific content areas such as circle geometry. Every contribution in a mathematics classroom is valuable, as meaningful participation promotes student ownership of learning. This study, adopting a qualitative case study design, explores two teaching strategies in circle geometry and their impact on students’ contributions using transcript of videotaped lessons. The sample would comprise Senior Secondary School two students and two mathematics teachers. Data from classroom observations would be analyzed using descriptive statistics and Brodie’s (2008) analytical framework. The perceived findings would reveal that students’ contributions are more conforming in reciprocal classrooms, positively influencing learning outcomes. It would be recommended that secondary school teachers as well as education policy makers should adopt reciprocal teaching strategy as a method of teaching to enhance students’ understanding of mathematics.
