LAGOS NAWA, I SWEAR: THE LINGUISTIC AND STYLISTIC SIGNATURES OF LAGOS S INTANGIBLE HERITAGE
AUTHORS: SHABI O. Aduke AKANDE O. RuthThis paper explores the linguistic and stylistic signatures of the city of Lagos Eko s intangible heritage. With emphasis on how language reflects the city s unique social, cultural and historical identity. Utilizing a combination of corpus linguistic, stylistic analysis, and ethnographic methods, the research investigates the linguistic features of Lagos life, including code-switching, Pidgin English, metaphors and local slang. The major sources of data for this research are: practical observations, recordings of everyday conversations from streets of Lagos, interviews with residents and an analysis of skits often created by local comedians and influencers reveals a vivid depiction of Lagos s urban landscape and nuanced linguistic features. Analyzing repeated linguistic constructs and stylistic choices in these resources, the paper points out the creative and adaptive use of language as a vehicle for humor, satire and social interaction. It also explores how language in Lagos is not only a medium of communication but also a marker of cultural identity and social integration.
