Research Interest

Topic: NATURAL PRODUCTS CHEMISTRY/FOOD GROWTH SCIENCES AND MEDICINAL PLANTS ANALYSIS.

Description: (i)Isolation and Identification of biocidal compounds in plant materials that may be of important for the promotion of health. (ii)Structure elucidation of secondary metabolites using gas Chromatography-mass Spectroscopy, which are much safer than conventionally pesticides to avoid the toxic effects of the synthetic agro-chemicals. (iii)Controlled release of volatile compounds from formulations as potentially fumigants/ insecticides and sprout suppressants on food with no adverse effect on the environment and non-target animals. (iv)Evaluation of the efficacy of wick and dust formulations of the essential oils on sprout suppression in potato and yam tubers. (v)Assessment of the bioactive potentials of the plant materials to determine toxicity and repellency effects of the volatile oils for assessment of IC50, LD50 and ED50 values of plant extracts on pest insects.(vi)Elucidation of natural products-based medicinal chemistry, as synthetic transformation of natural products for structure-based drug design, which focus on neglected and emerging tropical diseases.

Current Research

Assement of Phytochemical, Antioxidant and AntimicrobialL Activities of Chloroform Extract of the Stem and Leaves of Glyphaea brevis

Research Details

Medicinal plants are plants that are commonly used in treating and preventing specific ailments and diseases which are generally considered to be harmful to humans. Glyphaea brevis belongs to the family of Malvaceae (Tiliacea). It is locally use for the treatment of ulcers, dyspepsia, chest pain, diarrhea and dysentery. The purpose of this study is to determine the phytochemicals, antioxidant and antimicrobial activity of the the chloroform extract of G.brevis.

Work done so far:  The phytochemical screening shows that the stem and leaves of G.brevis contains saponin, tannin, phenol, terpenoid and Alkaloid. However cardiac glycoside and anthraquinone were present in the stem but not found in the leaves while Flavonoid and steroid were found in leave but not present in the stem.  The total anti oxidant capacity of the stem and the leaves (per 100 g) were 10.39 mg and 14.49 mg respectively. Total phenol content of the stem and leaves  (Per 100g)  were 10.31 mg and 8.83 mg respectively. Total flavonoid content of the stem and leave (per 100 g) were 29.38 mg and 23.83 mg respectively. The mean values of   the stem has higher Phenol and Flavonoid content compared to the leave while the leave possess higher antioxidant content compared to the stem. Both the stem and the leaves of the chloroform extracts.

Further work to be done:  Polar solvent such as methanol  would be used to determine the effect the effect of the crude extracts on Glyphaea brevis to determine its antimicrobial activities.
