Research Interest

Topic: Variability Assessment Of Selected Digitaria Exilis And Digitaria Iburua Exposed To Simulated Flood Stress

Description: There is an urgent need to look towards developing germplasm that would withstand some of the effects of climate change, most especially floods. My research will investigate the performance of Digitaria exilis and Digitaria iburua from Five 5 northern states in Nigeria under varying flood stress.

Current Research

Genetic Linkage Map and QTLs Identification for drought-tolerant traits in Fonio Digitaria exilis Kippist.

Research Details

Fonio is one of the neglected and underutilized crops of Africa. Low rainfall in fonio-growing locations across Africa has hindered crop productivity. Drought affects both quantitative and qualitative traits in fonio, hence quantitative trait loci QTLs identification is important for plant breeders in the selection of drought-tolerant fonio genotypes. In this study, 112 third filial generation F3 individuals from crosses between drought-tolerant fonio genotypes Digitaria exilis Kippist P25 Nyemat and drought-susceptible NA1 Aneme which showed differentiating traits both for qualitative and quantitative characters were used to calculate Polymorphic information content PIC , heterozygosity, construct linkage map and identify possible QTLs associated with drought traits. To estimate the association of each marker to a trait, Single Marker Analysis SMA would be performed followed by inconclusive composite interval mapping ICIM . QTL for Primary root length would be detected. The linkage map that would be generated in this present study indicates that future research should include more molecular markers to generate a more dense linkage map and cover the fonio genome.
