DISCOURSE ANALYSIS METHODS IN QUALITATIVE RESEARCH: A FOCUS ON MANAGEMENT SCIENCES RESEARCH
Data analysis is fundamental to the output of any research study, irrespective of the research paradigm employed. Qualitative data analysis, such as discourse analysis, in management sciences research has received probably the least thoughtful discussion in research literature. Hence, this study examined discourse analysis methods in qualitative research, with focus on management sciences research, with its primary objective being the applicability of discourse analysis in the field of management sciences. The study adopted an exploratory research design, aimed at explaining and bolstering understanding on the relevance of discourse analysis in qualitative management science research. Findings revealed that though discourse analysis is conducted in numerous ways, even in management sciences research, all of the techniques are centered on utilizing language and linguistic to convey how a social context or phenomenon is viewed and seen by the different actor, with each struggling to achieve hegemony. The study concluded that discourse analysis can be useful as a qualitative method in management sciences research, as it helps to show the importance of language in the discourse of social context and phenomenon, and also enhances the relationship of two or more social issues being linked together in management and organizational studies. It is thus recommended that discourse analysis should be encouraged more in the field management sciences and adopted as a technique for reporting of findings.
