Oral Health Status, Pattern of Gingival Enlargement, and Salivary Cortisol in Pregnant Women in Lagos, Lagos State, Nigeria
Women's physiologic functions, during pregnancy, undergo a series of changes that allow the body to adapt to the new environment of pregnancy. The pregnant state affects many organ systems, which can include the oral cavity. There are many common oral changes in pregnancy such as pregnancy gingivitis, pregnancy tumor, tooth mobility, periodontitis, tooth erosion, dental caries. The increased susceptibility to oral diseases in pregnancy, are associated with changes in hormones (mainly markedly elevated levels of estrogen and progesterone), diet, and hygiene habits. The aim of this study is to Assess the General Oral Health Status, Pattern of Gingival Enlargement and Salivary cortisol in Pregnant Women in Lagos, Lagos State. Nigeria. Methodology; This will be a cross-sectional study to be conducted among 102 pregnant women that will be attending the ante-natal clinics of Ayinke house, Ikeja and Maryland primary health centre, Lagos, Lagos state, within a period of 2months in 2024. Convenient sampling technique shall be used to select the subjects for the study will be carried out using SPSS 24 (IBM SPSS Inc). Descriptive statistics will be carried out for socio-demographic variables such as age, marital status, occupation, and educational status. For descriptive variables that are continuous, parameters such as mean, median, measures of variability will be determined. For descriptive variables that are categorical, simple frequency and percentages will be determined. Statistical significance will be inferred at pa 0.05.
