Topic: ASSESSMENT OF CLEFT LIP AND PALATE PRESENTATION AND TREATMENT NEEDS IN LAGOS STATE UNIVERSITY TEACHING HOSPITAL (LASUTH)

Description:

Introduction: Cleft lip and palate are common congenital craniofacial anomaly. They occur due to the failure of fusion of facial processes during embryogenesis resulting in several clinical presentations of the defects. This disturbance in normal growth occurs around the 4th – 12th week of gestational life. The management of Cleft lip and palate is multidisciplinary. Aim: The study aims to to identify the different clinical presentations and treatment needs of patients with cleft lip and palate in LASUTH. Methods: The study will be a comparative study involving all patients with cleft lip and palate that have received surgical care at LASUTH from January 2020 till 2025. The case notes will be retrieved from the Health Records unit and all relevant information including bio data, contact address and phone numbers of the patient’s parents, type of cleft and type of operation done will be recorded. Results: The results will show the prevalence and pattern of Cleft lip and palate among patients seen in LASUTH and their dental treatment needs. This will help in planning, follow up and policy making in order to tailor the available resources to their management. Conclusion: Multidisciplinary approach to the management of individuals with cleft lip and palate should be encouraged and practiced in all centres caring for these individuals.

FACTORS INFLUENCING PATIENT'S CHOICE FOR PULP THERAPY OR TOOTH EXTRACTION

Research Details

Introduction: Dental caries is a multifactorial infectious process and results in the dissolution of dental hard tissue i.e. enamel and dentine. If left untreated, it results in pain, swelling and possibly eventual loss of the tooth. If dental caries progresses to an irreversible state, the options of treatment include pulp therapy or extraction both aimed at discontinuation of the infectious process. Aim: This study aims to describe the factors that influence patients opting for pulp therapy or extraction as the preferred treatment choice for an irreversibly damaged tooth.  Methods: This is a prospective study to be carried out in Paediatric dentistry unit of the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital LASUTH Ikeja. Data to be collected include age, sex, socioeconomic status, presenting complaint, clinical diagnosis, choice of treatment, factors affecting choice of treatment. Data collected will be analyzed using SPSS. Results will be presented as tables and charts, mean and standard deviation will be calculated. The level of significance will be set at 5%. Contribution: This study will inform us on the preferred choice of management and factors influencing these choices. This information will influence the need for more health promotion and awareness of preventive measures, increasing the scope of health insurance and policy making.
