THE IMPORTANCE OF DIGITAL MEDIA AS A TOOL FOR CULTURAL PRESERVATION IN NIGERIA
The late Professor Akinwumi Isola, a renowned Nigerian scholar with the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Nigeria, embarked on a mission to preserve the Yoruba epic poem, "Ori Olokun." This ancient oral tradition, that has passed down through generations, was at the grave risk of disappearing due to the challenge of urbanisation and cultural erosion. Having recognised the potential of digital media to safeguard this cultural treasure, Isola, in collaboration with others, created an interactive website with audio recordings, translations, and annotations.
The above anecdote suggests that digital media, which are the various forms of media that make use of digital technologies to create, distribute, share, and consume content, could be a veritable tool for cultural preservation.
Having observed the importance of cultural preservation, Nigeria's cultural artefacts and traditions appears to be facing significant threats due to lack of documentation and preservation. Digital media offers a viable solution to these challenges. This study explores the potential of digital media in preserving Nigeria's rich cultural heritage. Hence, this study examining the existing state of digital cultural preservation in Nigeria, and highlights the challenges and opportunities. The goal is to find out whether digital media can serve as a vital tool for cultural preservation because of its potential to promote cultural diversity, and cross-cultural understanding emphasises its significance in safeguarding Nigeria's rich cultural heritage. Nigeria, with its rich cultural diversity, struggles to preserve its heritage digitally.
