War and Dramaturgy in Selected African Plays
This study investigates the impact of war on the consciousness of some selected African playwrights. It explores Soyinkas Death and the Kings Horseman, Osofisans Morountodun, and Ngugi wa Thiongo and Micrere Mugos The Trials of Dedan Kimathi, as dramatic testaments that grapple with the consequences of colonial or post-colonial violence on African peoples. This study adopts a materialist template in its exploration of the three texts. This template recognizes both the repressive state organs represented by the coercive instruments of state power like the armed forces, Police, Prison etc., and the noncoercive ideological apparatuses of the state among which are the family, school, and cultural institutions. It also highlights the dramaturgic indebtedness of the playwrights to both autochthonous dramatic heritage which embraces the use of songs, proverbs, etc., and the prevalent Western dramatic techniques. The study concludes that this valiant African dramatists are trying to come to terms with the contradictions of the contemporary times.
