CULTURAL AESTHETICS OF YORUBA DRAMATIC FESTIVALS EPA MASQURADE EXAMPLE

Research Details

From early twentieth century to the present , Yoruba people have made significant contributions to human culture in visual and performance arts. These have prompted previous scholars to delve in to popular festivals like Osun Osogbo, Oro, Agemo, Ojude Oba, Epa-type masqurade ride, Eyo, among others numerous to mention but schorlaship on aesthetics and functions of Epa masqurade festival among Ekiti people is scarce and insufficient . This research fills the gap The thrust of this work is to establish and analyse, project and document the cultural aesthetics elements and functions of E pa masquerade festival of the E ki ti people of the south western part of Nigeria. The study is pivoted on the analytical framework of cultural performance theory and cultural semiotic theory as the analytical tool for data and textual analysis which offers an approach to understanding culture within the activity of everyday life. It serves as a means to conceptualise culture by placing culture at the centre of hegemonic or dominating messages and revealing the hierarchical structure of the society through life experiences to describe and analyse the festival. The study adopted a quantitative research approach for data collection and analysis in three communities of E ki ti West of South Western Nigeria.The study dwell upon extensive literary analysis. This involved the researcher using an interview schedule, focus group discussion FGD and observation method. Thirty two key informant and three major masqurade were selected for analysis. The findings of this research establish the cultural aesthetic such as incantatory supplications, iwure dance, dramatic performance which are used as tool for co existence and development as reflected through the performance. Socio-cultural functions of Epa traditional festival was also established This is due to peculiarity of African worldview beyond.
