The Effects of poor Hospital waste management on Ground water quality in Lagos State
Groundwater is believed to have more benefits over surface water as it has suspended matter; it rarely contains petroleum products, pathogenic bacteria, unless contaminated by human activity. The study will assess the status of groundwater around major dumpsites in Lagos State, Nigeria. Water samples will be taken from 10 different locations selected locations for the study. Physico-chemical parameters will be analysed and the heavy metals Zinc, Iron, Lead, Nickel and Cadmium concentrations of the water samples from the 10 sites will be investigated using Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer AAS . The pH for the water in this study, the electrical conductivity, TDS, TPH, COD and BOD values will be taken respectively. The mean concentrations of heavy metals Zn, Fe, Pb, Ni and Cd in water samples will also be taken respectively. A one way analysis of variance ANOVA for the heavy metals in the groundwater samples will as well be taken. The degree of contamination the water quality index WQI as well as Pollution index PLI will be calculated. From the result obtained, Heavy metals present in the water samples will be compared with WHO standard of permissible limit required for drinking water. Recommendations will be made based on the outcome of the study.
