Biography

Prof Omolade Okwa (nee Rotimi) is a Zoologist and a Professor of Parasitology in the Department of Zoology and Environmental Biology, Faculty of Science LASU. She completed her Secondary education at Ikeja High School GRA Ikeja Lagos in 1986 where she had several merit awards. She obtained B.Sc (1990), M.Sc (1992 and Ph.D (1997) from the Premier Nigerian University of Ibadan. Her Ph.D thesis was on the influence of sociocultural factors on the epidemiology and control of Onchocerciasis among women in a rainforest and savannah foci in Nigeria. This triggered her interest in Women and Tropical diseases. She believes that women should not be neglected in health issues as custodians of health values in the home front. Prof Okwa has been teaching and doing research in parasitology for over 26 years in LASU. She has supervised over 60 undergraduates projects and seminars , 8 masters dissertations and 2 Ph.D Thesis to date. She was a Commonwealth Fellow and Visiting Research Fellow at the Centre for Entomology and Parasitology, School of life Sciences, Keele University between 2004 and 2007. She had collaborations with the School of life Sciences, Keele University and the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine UK and also the Nigerian institute of Medical Research in the area of malaria transmission dynamics. Her expertise is on malaria transmission dynamics and neglected tropical diseases. She was a former Head of Department of Zoology and senate member LASU from 2002-2003, 2007- 2010 and 2014- 2016. She has over 65 journals, 5 books and 5 book chapters. She has served as a member and also chaired several commitees within the University. Prof Omolade Okwa is the President of Organisation for women in Science for the Developing World (LASU Chapter). She has organised several scientific workshops and seminars for staff and students as OWSD President and first Vice president. She was an external examiner to the Department of Veterinary Microbiology and Parasitology, University of Ibadan and also an assessor and seasoned grant reviewer to several other institutions. She is a member of the Zoological Society of Nigeria, Nigeria Society of Experimental Biology and Parasitology and Public Health Society of Nigeria. Her inaugural lecture held on August 10th 2021 was entitled: Parasites, the unwelcomed and ungrateful strangers; the battle line! Prof Okwa is an editor of several books such as Helminthiasis and Malaria Parasites published by intech open access and Journal of Cell and Animal Biology and Open Journal of Epidemiology. She is a reviewer for several journals such as Scientific African, Libya Journal of Medicine, Journal of Medicine and Medical Sciences and the Annual Review and Research in Science.
