Research Interest

Topic: Molecular Cancer Genetics

Description: The African Cancer Genome project is my latest quest. The goal is to catalog the cancer genome and identify genes that are frequently mutated in African cancers. 500fresh cancer samples from the top 10 cancers in Africa with matching blood would be sequenced by WES and somatic mutations identified. Our results would be compared to those of COSMIC to identify mutations that are peculiar to African cancers. These peculiar variants would help in designing new treatments techniques.

Current Research

Genomic sequencing of selected genetic diseases - 2022

Research Details

IntroductionGenetic diseases start with the same DNA, that develops changes which causes diseases. The genetic diseases can either be somatic e.g. cancers, type II diabetes or germline e.g. sickle cell disease . ProblemsGenetic disease is an area to which limited research has been undertaken in Nigeria and a lot of this limitation is due to limited expertise and the socio-economic burden on research, in Nigeria. Triple negative poor prognostic breast cancers is common amongst Africans compared to other ethnic groups. Same is reported for type II diabetes and sickle cell diseases. Methods and resultsBy comparing DNA from diseased samples with matching normal cells, these precise changes are detected and collected as data to create a resource for research to help develop targeted therapy and effective treatment.ConclusionInterrogating risk variants of these selected genetic diseases amongst individuals in Africa, in order to better understand variations in the genome that will be relevant to explainingdiagnosing and improve treatment of these diseases thus, bring benefit to patients, beckons.
