The Relationship between Stock Market Performance and Industrial Production index: Evidence from NSE

Research Details

The research aims at investigating the relationship between stock market performance and industrial production using the industry component of gross domestic product as a proxy. The work rely on secondary data that will be sourced from the Nigerian Stock Exchange and National bureau of Statistics. Econometric techniques will be applied to the linear model developed for the purpose of data analysis using statistical software package known as e-views 10. There  are motivations behind this study. Nigerian government has rolled out a lot of policies in the past to enhance  industrialization as well as the development of the financial system. However, most of these policies failed to achieve desire result. Despite all these policies, Nigeria as a country is not achieving the expected level of industrialization because the actual growth rate is always less than the targeted growth rate over the years as revealed by yearly budget performance analysis . Furthermore, there are few research work in this area in Nigeria unlike developed countries. In addition empirical studies carried out in developing countries came out with mixed results. The outcome of the study will no doubt helps in prescribing appropriate economic and financial policies that will stimulate the growth of industrial production as well as that of the stock market. The hypothesis of the study is that stock market performance in Nigeria has no significant effect on industrial production index.
