Volatile and Non-volatile Chemical Compositions of Selected Nigerian Medicinal Plants and their Medicinal Potentials
Introduction:
Plants, animals and micro-organisms represent a reservoir of natural products,
which are natural sources deriving compounds. Particularly, plant kingdom
offers a variety of natural products species still used as remedies for several
diseases in many parts of the world.
Aims/Objectives:
The on-going research investigate the Isolation, characterization and Pharmacological
activities of Volatile and Non-volatile chemical constituents from selected
Nigerian medicinal plants
Methodology: Plant
samples will be selected based on the ethnomedicinal information. Plant
material will be extracted using cold extraction method. The isolation an of bioactive components shall be done using chromatography techniques. The Volatile constituents of the plant
samples will be distilled using a modified Clevenger-type apparatus. The structure of isolated constituents shall be
determined using spectroscopic techniques while the volatile constituents shall
be identified using GC-MS analysis. Antioxidant, antimicrobial, antidiabetics and cytotoxicity potentials of the chemical constituents will be carried
out according to the standard procedures
Expected
Results: The antioxidant, antidiabetic, antimicrobial and
cytotoxicity potentials of extracts and volatile oils at the tested
concentrations will be determined while phytochemicals responsible for the
activities will also be identify.
Contribution
to Knowledge: The chemical constituents that will be
identified will serve as future lead drugs. Newly Isolated compounds will
increase the Library of Natural Products
