Missed opportunities for vaccination in the first year of life at a teachng hospital in Lagos
Immunization remains a major
public tool in eliminating vaccine-preventable diseases. The first year of life
presents the best time for children to be fully vaccinated. This reduces the incidence
of vaccine preventable diseases and numerous complications which increase the morbidity
and mortality of such unimmunized children. This is even more important in a teaching
hospital where immunization may not be the core service available. A
significant percentage of children who present to health facilities are not vaccinated
even though they are eligible. The study
seeks to determine the proportion of children with missed opportunities for
vaccination and to identify the reasons as well as assess the knowledge of
health workers on immunization. The study design is retrospective audit of
immunization records of children seen at clinics in the hospital and assessment of
missed opportunities for immunization. True contra-indications are identified
while false contra-indications due to parents/ guardians and health workers are
some reasons for missed opportunities. Other
resosn are health system factors. The study has potential to stregthen primary
health care services.
