Topic: Impacts Of Solar Geoengineering To Climate Change Over Africa

Description:

INTRODUCTION Solar Geoengineering, is described as a potential option for reducing the most dangerous changes to Earth's climate as a result of large greenhouse gas increases. One potential method for achieving this is the introduction of aerosols into the stratosphere. AIM/OBJECTIVES This research proposal aims to assess the impacts of SAI on Climate change and its effects on crops in Africa. Its objectives are: i) evaluate Pt, T and DpT using satellite and solar geoengineering simulated data; ii) observe the spatio-temporal distribution of changes between the observed and simulated Pt, T, and DpT over Africa; and iii) assess the potential impact of changes in Pt, T and DpT due to solar geoengineering on plant yields. METHODOLOGY The assessment of historical climate patterns to be used will be drawn from the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts ECMWF archive. Monthly Data comprising temperature, pressure, rainfall, precipitation, and relative humidity are examined at a resolution of 0.25 x 0.25, for 42-year period (1980-2022). For insights into potential climatic trajectories, future projections will be derived from diverse scenarios from 2015 to 2100. EXPECTED RESULTS The result of this research will provide valuable insight into the potential effects of the implementation of solar geoengineering on climate systems and agriculture. CONTRIBUTION TO KNOWLEDGE The results from this research will assist relevant agencies saddled with the responsibility of gathering information on climate change mitigation for policy makers.
