Effect of tranexamic acid in ischemia/reperfusion injury in orthotopic liver transplantation in pigs

Research Details

A liver transplant is an operation that replaces a patient s diseased liver with a whole or partial healthy liver from another person. The major determinant of the survival of the donor liver is the management of the ischemia/reperfusion injury suffered by the donor liverThe aim of the study was to find out how the drug tranexamic acid which is readily available and cheap can be used to reduce the deleterious effect of ischemia/reperfusion injury on the newly transplanted liver.2 group of pigs were used for the study and they underwent orthotopic liver transplant. The treatment group recieved tranexamic acid 6 hrs before the liver transplant while the control group did not. The result was very encouraging as there was evidence of less injury on the liver when the animals treated with tranexamic acid was compared to control animals.Liver transplantation is available in the advanced countries for the last 30 years and clinical trials are ongoing to identify which drugs can help reduce the injury before using immunosupressive drugs.
