EFFECTS OF UTILIZING FLIPPED CLASSROOM ON TERTIARY SCHOOL STUDENTS’ ACHIEVEMENT IN A PRACTICAL-BASED COURSE.
A flipped classroom is a teaching mode that
swaps the arrangement of knowledge imparting and knowledge internalization
compared to traditional classroom. In the flipped classroom, the roles of
teachers and students have been changed and the class time would have a new
plan. In the flipped classroom,
the traditional lecture and homework elements are reversed or flipped. Students
watch short instructional videos of the class that they want to attend at home
before the class and then use in-class time for exercises, projects, or
discussions. According to Zupon (2017), in the flipped classroom model, students are to listen or
watch the primary lesson at home, and then when they get to school, the teacher
is their guide in doing what is normally considered “homework”.
This
approach or model has been endorsed by technologist and educators to give more
active student experience. At the heart of the flipped classroom is moving the
delivery of material or content of the class to be done before the formal class
time, through the use of extensive notes, video recorded lectures and other
appropriate means, and using formal class time for students to undertake
collaborative and interactive activities relevant to that material or content.
This will prove more effective in courses or subjects that are time consuming,
over populated by students, and require lots of skill acquisition and
activities. These types of courses or subjects exist at every level of
education.
