Research Interest

Topic: E-GOVERNANCE AND E- LOCAL GOVERNMENT

Description: THE OBJECTIVE OF THIS RESEARCH INTEREST IS TO EXAMINE THE POSSIBILITY OF APPLYING E-GOVERNANCE IN THE LOCAL GOVERNMENTS OF NIGERIA. MY VIEW HERE IS THAT E-GOVERNANCE WILL GO TO A REASONABLE EXTENT TO CURB CORRUPT PRACTICES IN THE LOCAL GOVERNMENTS AND BRING ABOUT EFFICIENT AND EFFECTIVE SERVICE DELIVERIES IN THE LOCAL GOVERNMENTS. COPIOUS REFERENCES ARE MADE TO COUNTRIES WHERE E-GOVERNANCE HAS TO A LARGE EXTENT HELPED TO CURB CORRUPT PRACTICES. FURTHER TO THE STUDY HINDRANCES THAT ARE LIKELY TO AFFECT THE LOCAL GOVERNMENTS FROM FULLY ADOPTING E-GOVERNANCE AS A PRACTICE WILL BE HIGHLIGHTED. HERE ALSO, THE SURVEY AND CONTENT ANALYSIS METHODS OF RESEARCH WILL BE UTILISED

Current Research

THE EVALUATION OF MONETARY AND FISCAL POLICIES FOR NIGERIA S SOCIO-ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT 1993-1997

Research Details

MONETARY AND FISCAL POLICIES ARE ECONOMIC INSTRUMENTS WITH WHICH GOVERNMENTS REVAMP THEIR ECONOMY. DURING THE MILITARY REGIME OF GENERAL SANNI ABACHA, FROM 1993 TO 1997, THE ECONOMY BECAME SO POOR THAT THERE WAS GENERAL ECONOMIC INSTABILITY IN NIGERIA. THE STUDY WAS THEN EMBARKED UPON TO EXAMINE SOME OF THE INSTRUMENTS FOR MONETARY AND FISCAL POLICIES IN NIGERIA AND TO DETERMINE THE EXTENT TO WHICH THE GOVERNMENT WAS UTILISING SAME TO REVAMP THE ECONOMY. THE SURVEY RESEARCH METHOD AND SECONDARY DATA WERE APPLIED FOR THE STUDY. THE DESCRIPTIVE STATISTICAL METHOD WAS USED TO ANALYSE THE DATA COLLECTED. THE STUDY REVEALED THAT SUCH MONETARY AND FISCAL POLICIES AS BANK INTEREST RATE AND COMPANY TAXES WERE ON THE HIGH SIDE WHICH DISCOURAGED MANY INVESTORS/BUSINESS MEN AND WOMEN FROM OBTAINING LOANS FROM THE BANK. SIMILARLY, COMPANY TAXES WERE ON THE HIGH SIDE THUS WEAKENING THE FINANCIAL STRENGTH OF MANY OF THE COMPANIES MAKING THEM NOT TO EXPAND. THE STUDY CAME TO THE CONCLUSION THAT EXCEPT THE GOVERNMENT ENCOURAGES THE CITIZENS BY ENCOURAGING THE BANKS TO REDUCE THEIR INTEREST RATES AND REDUCE THE TAXES PAID BY THE COMPANIES, ECONOMIC STABILITY AND GROWTH WILL REMAIN A FAR CRY. IT THEREFORE RECOMMENDED AMONG OTHERS THAT THE GOVERNMENT SHOULD LOOK INTO THE HIGH TAX RATES AND BANK INTERESTS FOR LOAN SEEKERS TO REVAMP THE ECONOMY AND POSSIBLY GRANT TAX HOLIDAYS FOR NEW COMPANIES TO BE ESTABLISHED.
