Managing Public University Education in Nigeria for Effective Service Delivery: Save the Bridge from Collapsing
This paper addresses the pressing issue of managing public university education in Nigeria to ensure effective service delivery and prevent the potential collapse of the educational bridge. The study critically examines the current state of public university education in Nigeria, highlighting the challenges and factors contributing to its deterioration. Additionally, it explores strategies and interventions aimed at improving the management and delivery of education services in Nigerian public universities. The research adopts a qualitative approach, incorporating an extensive literature review and analysis of relevant policy documents. Findings indicate that inadequate funding, inadequate infrastructure, inadequate staffing, corruption, and ineffective management practices are key challenges facing public universities in Nigeria. These challenges impede the delivery of quality education and hinder the development of a skilled and competitive workforce. To mitigate these challenges, the study suggests several recommendations. First, there is a need for increased funding and sustainable resource allocation to address infrastructure deficits, improve faculty recruitment and development, and enhance teaching and learning facilities. Second, effective management practices, such as transparent governance, merit-based appointments, and performance-based evaluations, should be implemented to ensure accountability and efficiency in university administration. Furthermore, the study emphasizes the importance of adopting innovative teaching and learning methods, leveraging technology, and fostering research and collaboration with industries to enhance educational outcomes and graduates' employability. Finally, the study underscores the significance of robust regulatory frameworks and policies that encourage public-private partnerships, community engagement, and stakeholder involvement in shaping the future of university education in Nigeria.
