Prof. Olubunmi Sunday Clement MAKINDE was born on the 2nd of February 1962 and hails from Ogotun-Ekiti, Ekiti State. He attended St. Thomas Catholic Primary School, Ogotun-Ekiti (1970 – 1975) and Corpus Christi College, Ilawe-Ekiti (1975 – 1981). He trained at the University of Ilorin where he obtained a B. Sc. Honours degree{Second Class Upper Division (21)} in Botany (1982 -1986) and M. Sc. Botany (Applied Genetics and Plant Breeding (1987-1989). He obtained his Ph. D (2009) from the Federal University of Agriculture Abeokuta (FUNAAB) Abeokuta. His Ph. D work focused on the assessment of genetic divergence, character correlations, genotype by environment (GXE) interactions and stability analysis in accessions of groundnut (Arachis hypogaea L.). The study aimed at determining the extent of genetic variability within the groundnut accessions, as well as classifying characters that contributed largely to the observed variations and also identifying groundnut genotypes that adapted readily to south-western Nigeria ecology. He has received a number of academic distinctions, Fellowships and awards. In 1985 he bagged the United Match Company award for the best student in Plant Anatomy, in 2001 the United Nations University Training Fellowship award in Biodiversity Conservation (University Ghent, Ghent, Belgium) and more recently in 2013, Fellow of African Plan Breeding Academy (Anchored by University of California, Davis). He is widely travelled within and outside Nigeria for academic, nature conservation and ecotorism. His current research interest is in the area of mutation breeding, rapid plant multiplication and germplasm establishment for less utilized (orphan) crop plants.
Prof. Makinde occupies leadership position in the University and outside. He has served as Head, Department of Botany and in various committees of the University; notable among which is the Business committee of Senate. He was once the Chairman; Church Council of St. Thomas’ Catholic Church, Ogotun-Ekiti and President of Havilla Homefront Association, a social-cultural organization. His hobbies include; gardening, listening to music, reading, travelling and photography. He is a member of many professional bodies; Which include Academic Staff Union Of University (ASUU), Botanical Society of Nigeria (BOTSON), Genetic Society of Nigeria (GSN), Horticultural Society of Nigeria (HOTSON), Nigerian Biosafety Association (NiBSA) African Plant Breeding Academy (AfPBA), African Biosafety Association (AfBSA) and International Institute for Horticultural Science (ISHS).
