VARIETIES CHARACTERIZATION IN GOLD FISH, CARASSIUS CARASSIUS
Brief Introduction: Gold fish Carassius carassius is a member of the Family Cyprinidae. It is a native of Asia continent and freshwater fish species. Its culture in freshwater spans over 1700 years. For example it was raised in captivity at Buddhist monasteries by Nan Song (1227-1279). Gold fish is known for its morphological changes, which are results of genetic mutations which man has spotted and favoured by selective line breeding to perpetuate them according to his fancy. Human husbandry of this species has unlocked its huge genetic potential, but it has taken a tremendous amount of effect to select and stabilize desirable gene combination. Objectives: In Nigeria, goldfish culture like other ornamental fishes is at infancy stage, and not much is understood about its biology, physiology and genetic. Therefore, the current research programme is aimed at characterizing the varieties of goldfish at molecular level of analysis using genetic markers. The genetic markers such as Randomly Amplified Polymorphic DNA (RAPD) primers and RAPD markers may provide precise results on genetic and morphological diversities among the populations of this fish.
