Public hospitals are fountain of competency, quality service delivery and hospitality in any nation. In Lagos State, the health service and all the stakeholders required for managing the public hospitals are unable to create enabling environment with modern hospital facilities and equipment for better  service and quality delivery for the healthcare professionals. With this challenge in place, the study examined the effects of workplace environment on retention outcomes among healthcare professionals in Lagos State public hospitals. A survey research design was adopted in the study. The population was 3465 medical doctors and registered nurses in 27 general hospitals in Lagos State. Sample size was used to get a sample of 400. Multi-stage sampling techniques were used to select respondents for the study. A structured questionnare was adapted and validated using content and construct validity test to collect data from the respondents. The reliability of the instrument, using Cronbach Alpha, yields values which range from 0.70 to 0.88. Data were analysed using descriptive and inferential statistics. Results revealed that there was a significant relationship between physical work environment and commitment of healthcare professionals in Lagos State public hospitals. Psychological factors had a significant influence on loyalty of healthcare professionals in Lagos State public hospitals. It is therefore recommended among others that management of Lagos State public hospitals should consistently develop policies that are implementable and centered on improved physical work environment .

Psychological Factor and Reward System; Implication for Registered Nurses Performance in Lagos State General Hospitals

Research Details

This study investigates the influence of psychological factor and reward system on registered nurses performance in some selected general hospitals in Lagos State, Nigeria. Its believed that registered nurses performance is necessary and paramount issue in healthcare delivery system of any developed nation in the world, but it is been affected by many psychological factors which result in reducing the registered nurses performance in discharging their duties which affect people lives negatively. Survey research approach was used as the design of the study. The data was collected from five General Hospitals representing the divisions in Lagos State. 258 copies of questionnaire were distributed to respondents, 224 copies were returned and valid for purpose of analysis. Correlation coefficient and simple regression analysis were used in testing the hypotheses. The findings revealed that there is positive relationship between pay incentives to commitment of registered nurses. Also, there is positive relationship between attitude to work and nurses’ effectiveness. Therefore, based on the findings of this research it is recommended that the public hospitals should continue improving the welfare of the registered nurses, the management of the hospital should improves the frequency of refresher training on issue of displaying a positive attitude towards patients and all other staff in the health institutions
