Education and Covid-19 in Nigeria : the transformational Lens

Research Details

Prior to the emergence of COVID-19 at global stage, education in Nigeria at all levels faced various challenges viz a viz: poor infrastructure, poor remuneration, insufficient funds, shortage of teaching staff and host of others that hamper the advancement of our education system. The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic has aggravated the learning gap, with more learners at risk of suffering from learning loss. The immediate resultant effects of this pandemic may stay with us for years to come, it is imperative to note therefore that this crisis has provided a unique opportunities as well as turning point for our educational system, particularly restructuring and rebuilding resilience around our educational system in Nigeria. Educational planners and educational policymakers must take the advantages of these unique opportunities to dig into how this emerging realities could bring into being a new education structure and infrastructure that can tackle the two nation’s most burning pre-pandemic education crisis which is access to quality education as evidenced that Nigeria has the highest number of out-of-school children in the world, and quality of infrastructure because majority of the learners are not learning. The transformational lens of COVID-19 therefore is the need to embrace more technology into the teaching and learning processes. Provision of digital devices to learners, like adaptive learning technology, can ensure individualised learning with minimal educator engagement, and have the potential to deliver better learning experiences at government subsidized input.
