Ajumo Paradigm in Driving Effective Teaming

Research Details

The topic aims at reflecting on African Paradigm in Leading Organizational Change in both public and private sectors of African Nations.  Using desktop method and Key Informants Interview (KII) cum Focus Group Discussion, information was gathered to reflect on Ajumo (communal-collectivism) in investigating how collaboration was used in executing and accomplishing tasks among the Yoruba of Western Nigeria. The study examined three levels of Ajumoro (Involving-Decision-Making), Ajumose (Collaborative Execution of Decision) and Ajumopin (Collective Distribution of Reward). It was found that communal-collectivism (Ajumo) was used majorly in thrift, farm work, craft, and by guilds to accomplish collaboration that all members were involved in to effectively accomplish many works to the satisfaction, commitment and dedication of all involved. The output of Ajumoro resulted in robust ideas, diverse opinions, information and knowledge to bear on the ultimate decision reached. This made the decision satisfactory to the community of workers. Also, since all were involved in Ajumoro (Decision making), the ownership of the decision and therefore implementation (Ajumose) becomes flawless. Further, since the reward and the proportion accruing to each member is known and communally decided by them, the tendency to participate and get involved in the subsequent Ajumoro (decision making) and Ajumose (collective execution) and Ajumopin, continually become a cycle that drive effectively every team and teaming process.  How this paradigm can be aligned and applied in the modern day corporate and at nations' levels would be outlined and the benefits of using them, away from eurocentric models, would be outlined.
