Topic: ORIENTATION OF RESEARCH
Description: Music as an art form is a fundamental agent of culture and national identity. Nations of the world employ the instrumentality of music to chronicle their history, educate generations of traditional legacies, teach morals and propagate cultural phenomenon. Music serves as a vital tool in a people’s religions, it is very significant in the overall well-being of a nation. The significant impress of music inspired and shaped my life work and research scope which focused on Ethnomusicology and Music Education. My early research focused on the study of major musical elements in traditional Yoruba music with a view to adapting such elements in modern compositional documentation as reflected in the unpublished study of Apiiri music and ‘images of a disillusioned nation’. Also, my published research work in Ethnomusicology focused on different aspects of African Music with special focus on Nigeria. Topics explored included the music of new religious movements, structural and stylistic features, nature of musical instruments and intercultural dimensions of musical practices in Nigeria. Also, I conducted analysis of Nigerian music curriculum and music in the Nigerian school system. The outcome of these studies is evident in my local and international publications. The contributions of these researches include an exposure of the difference between the music taught in schools and the musical needs of the society. My research finding influenced the Association of Nigerian Musicologists who set up a committee to work on overhauling the Curriculum and musical practices offered in Nigerian schools and colleges.

Igbo Ora, a town situated about 80 kilometers away from Ibadan (the capital city of Oyo State in Nigeria) has been acknowledged as the town with the highest number of twins in the whole world. Findings show that music being part of everyday life of Africans also plays a major role in the day to day upbringing of twins in Igbo Ora. The Objectives of the study are to identify the music (in form of songs and the musical instruments) that are associated with the raising of twins in Igbo Ora, document the various reasons for which identified pieces of music are used and analyse and discuss the effects of identified music and music types on the lives of twins. Also the research will transcribe twins' songs for posterity in such a manner that it can be used intentionally. Field trips have been undertaken, data collected. the kings. chiefs and other principal informants interviewed while transcription and analysis of the collected data have begun.
