Africa and the Commonwealth
I was invited by the University of Lagos, the Department of History and Strategic Studies to do a chapter on Africa and the Commonwealth. I had had to use copiously the proceedings of the House of Commons. Not only was the core values of the Commonwealth highlighted the degree of conformity or otherwise by the member African nations of the Commonwealth was x-rayed. In essence the issues of the rule of Law, gender equality and integrity were taken lightly by the African member nations.Although the Commonwealth of Nations gave assistance in kind and cash to the African members, the purpose for which the fund was given was not fulfilled as a result of the negative attitudes of some African leaders. Comparative study was also undertaken. To this end these African countries that were fully democratized were composed with those that were not Tanzania, Zambia, Mozambique, Kenya and Rwanda were compared and contrasted with Nigeria. Difference between them in terms of the process of democratization, the monitoring process and so on were critically examined. The involvement of the commonwealth agencies in the process in order to determine the credibility of the elected process is part of the consideration.
