“ And I so do”: Tracking rapport management strategies in President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s speech on declaration of State of Emergency in Rivers State, Nigeria
The declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State, Nigeria, by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on March 18, 2025, is the main focus of this study. Presidential speeches are common in many academic works for strategic communication. This speech is analyzed for its multifaceted political purposes and practical implications in a volatile context. Oatey’s (2000) theory of rapport management is strategically deployed as a framework for analysis in this study. Quotations from this speech are critically and logically presented and analyzed for the purpose of revealing and tracking the particular strategies employed or used for political purposes. Four strategic rapport management strategies are identified: rapport enhancement, rapport maintenance, rapport neglect, and rapport challenge. These linguistic and rhetorical strategies are used by President Tinubu for building, maintaining, and/or threatening social harmony and are thus indicative of the multifaceted and powerful role of political discourse in managing crises of governance and stability.
