INFLUENCE OF WORKPLACE SPIRITUALITY ON TEACHERS’ ORGANISATIONAL COMMITMENT AND PERFORMANCE IN PUBLIC JUNIOR SECONDARY SCHOOLS IN LAGOS STATE EDUCATION DISTRICT V
In the present study, the relationship between workplace spirituality and the organisational commitment and performance of the teachers in public Junior Secondary Schools of Lagos State Education District V was investigated. The study was carried out based on a growing concern about decreased commitment and motivation of the teachers in schools, as well as low performance of such educators despite an increased understanding of the impact that workplace spirituality can have on the improvement of employees' well-being and productivity at their workplaces. Workplace spirituality can be referred to as employees' perception of meaningfulness, community, shared value system, trust and purpose in their jobs. The study utilized the design of descriptive survey research. The population of the study included all teachers working in public junior secondary schools of Lagos State Education District V. A total number of 200 teachers was taken as the sample size. In order to select the participants of the research, stratified and purposive sampling techniques were used. The data were gathered through a specially designed structured questionnaire that could provide information about workplace spirituality, teachers' organisational commitment and their job performance. Methodology was used in this research, and its validity was confirmed by a pilot study. Descriptive statistics, Pearson Product Moment Correlation, and multiple regression analyses were applied to analyze the data. It has been found that there is a significant positive association between workplace spirituality and teachers’ organisational commitment (r = .681, p < .05). It was found that there is a significant positive relationship between workplace spirituality and teachers’ job performance (r = .724, p < .05). Moreover, organisational commitment had a significant effect on the performance of teachers (r = .758, p < .05). According to multiple regression analysis, both workplace spirituality and organisational commitment significantly affect the performance of teachers, but workplace spirituality had more impact than organisational commitment.
