Topic: Islamic Cultural Studies
Description:
The focal point of my research work is on the adaptability of Islam in its pristine principles to cultures of receiving peoples (converts and admirers) whose philosophy and orientation is clearly different. The interaction and sharing process and the consequential fallout reflecting in syncretism form the basis of my research interest.

BETWEEN SALAT AND SPORTS: DEFINING AREAS OF CONVERGENCE AND DIVERGENCE
Salat as a ritual is the highest and
most sublime act in Islam meant to build the spirituality and morality of adherents.
Its observance involves effective mechanical coordination of the limbs (body),
mind and soul of the worshipper, a phenomenon in striking resemblance with the
requirements for optimal performance in sports. Whereas there are no mundane
trophies and medals to be won for the observance of salat like in sports, yet every worshipper expects nothing short of
God’s mercy and favour as rewards for their own acts of obeisance and worship
of Him in salat. These areas of convergence
between the two acts as defined by physical preparedness, mental alertness,
coordination of limbs, concentration of mind and expectation of rewards as well
as the differing values of both employing both descriptive and analytical
methods have been examined by this work. Experts in the field of sports who are themselves praying Muslims provided the practical assessment of some of the assumptions upon which the study is based. Observation of prayer (Salat) sessions as well as interaction with the worshippers on their physical and health conditions hinged on their performance of Salat is assessed.
