THE EFFECT OF CELLGEVITY ON HYDOXYUREA- INDUCED TOXICITY IN FEMALE RATS

Cancer chemotherapy is a method used in the treatment of cancer with adverse effect of toxicity in various organs of the body such as the reproductive organs thereby inducing oxidative stress. Hydroxyurea is an anticancer drug also usefulin treatment of sickle cell anemia that induces oxidative stress. Since antioxidants protect healthy cells from oxidative damage, this study is designed to evaluate the effect of cellgevity a known antioxidant on hydroxyurea induced reproductive toxicity in adult female Wistar rats. Twenty female wistar rats were divided into 4 groups A,B,C and D group A was the control group which was fed with water and rat chow. While group B, C, and D were administered with hydroxyurea, cellgevity and both hydroxyurea and cellgevity respectively for 21 days. Oestradiol, progesterone, follicke stimulating hormone FSH and luteinizing hormone LH assays were determined in the serum of adult female rats. The ovaries and uterus were used for antioxidant enzymes superoxide dismutase SOD and malondealdehyde concentration as well as histology. The results were expressed as mean SEM and statistically significant was accepted at p&0.05. The result will contribute to the possible effect of hydroxyurea on female reproductive system
