Current Research

Antipsychotic withdrawal mapping support mechanisms and outcome predictors through lived experiences

Research Details

The prescription of antipsychotics for schizophrenic patients are often for a long time.Adherence to antipsychotics is often poor due to the side effects or patients’ unwillingness to continue use indefinitely. Discontinuation of use commonly heralds relapse. There is emerging evidence that slow and cautious reductions will improve withdrawal outcomes.Little is known of the wider factors like support from health care professionals or a network of friends and family on successful withdrawal outcomes. This project will focus on exploring the factors at the individual, organizational and systems level that impact the withdrawal outcomes for people attempting to withdraw. The aim is to develop a framework for supporting people undergoing withdrawal by focusing on the context, mechanisms, and outcomes. The proposed methods would be mixed methods involving qualitative in-depth interviews of patients with lived experience and a questionnaire based assessment of psychiatrists, Psychiatric Nurses, family and friends support to help with this.
