Topic: Aflame In Motion: Identity Politics, War And Terrorism In Postcolonial African Movies
Description: Contemporary African history is a history of war, insurgence and terrorism. This is evident in the fact that Nigeria, the most populous black nation ranks third on the Global Terrorism Index after Iraq and Iran. What is happening in Nigeria is replicated in most other African countries. As expected, African moviemakers have consistently told these stories; underscoring the pain and squalor that these conflicts haul on the people. However, these films have not been collectively studied to understand the peculiarity of each conflict and proffer solutions to war, insurgence and terrorism in order to build a continent that will compete with others economically and politically. This study uses a combination of postcolonial, identity, and dependency theories to examine selected films to reveal the causes of these conflicts. It submits that for Africa to take its rightful place in the comity of nations, stop the mindless bloodshed leaders justly and transparently.
