Development and Integration of Nigerian Sign-Languages into Online Educational Videos for Inclusive Education at the Junior Secondary Schools, Nigeria

Research Details

The rapid adoption of online learning platforms represents a significant advancement for education in Nigeria. The global shift towards digital and online learning, accelerated by recent world events, has revolutionized educational delivery. Platforms like "My Personal Teacher" offer unprecedented access to knowledge for millions. However, this digital progress has inadvertently created profound barriers for learners with disabilities, particularly the deaf and hard-of-hearing (DHH) community. In alignment with Nigeria`s National Policy on Education and the global commitment to Sustainable Development Goal 4 (Inclusive Education), there is a pressing need to ensure that educational technologies serve all students equitably. For the estimated 70 million deaf people worldwide who use sign language as their first language, the vast majority of online video content remains linguistically inaccessible, creating significant barriers to their academic and personal development. This research is grounded in the urgent need to bridge this gap and ensure that the future of education is truly inclusive. The central problem this research addresses is the critical lack of linguistically accessible educational resources for people living with disabilities, particularly the DHH students at the Junior Secondary School (JSS) level. Most online video content, including that on platforms like mypteacher.com, relies on spoken audio and text-based captions. While captions provide a literal translation, they are inadequate for native signers, as Nigerian Sign Language (NSL) is a distinct language with its own grammar and syntax. This linguistic exclusion directly impedes comprehension, limits academic achievement, engagement, and contravenes the fundamental principles of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act. This study, therefore, seeks to bridge this critical gap by developing and validating a model for integrating Nigerian Sign Languages into online video lessons, thereby fostering a truly inclusive digital learning environment for Nigerian youth.
