DIGITAL LITERACY AND SKILLS OF INFORMATION PROFESSIONALS IN THE 21st CENTURY
ABSTRACTA changing world demands a changing skill. The importance of Information and Communication Technology ICT in our university library system is no longer an issue to be deliberated upon, the issue is how information professionals can ensure adequate and continuous derivation of its afforded benefits to improve upon their digital literacy skills. This study aimed at looking at the digital literacy skills of information professionals in academic library of Lagos State University. They are concerned with the collection, processing, storage, dissemination and maintenance of information resources and services. Thereby making information available to end-users through the use of digital tools.OBJECTIVES:This study investigated the digital literacy skills of information professionals in Fatiu Ademola Akesode library of Lagos State University in the 21st century, with the specific objectives of investigating the level of familiarity with some digital literacy tools necessary in discharging their duties in the 21st century, investigate how information professionals acquire digital literacy skills as well as the challenges encountered in acquiring and maintaining their digital literacy skills.METHODS:Total enumeration sampling techniques and survey research design was adopted for the study. Copies of a self-structured questionnaire were distributed among information professionals in Fatiu Ademola Akesode library of Lagos State University in order to gather their responses. The data collected were analysed using descriptive statistics such as frequencies and percentages.RESULTS:The study revealed that information professionals in Fatiu Ademola Akesode library of Lagos State University possesses digital literacy skills. There is institutional support as well as self-sponsorship in attending trainings and workshop on digital literacy skills.CONCLUSION:The study concluded that since man lives in a digital world, library services has gone beyond face-to-face interaction, information professionals should adequately upgrade themselves in order to meet up with the trend in digital technology.
