RESOURCE MANAGEMENT AND WORK VALUES IN PUBLIC AND PRIVATE ORGANISATIONS IN NIGERIA: A THEORETICAL DISCOURSE
Employees are the life blood of
every organisations, so therefore, organisations, both public and private who
desire positive work attitude/values from employees in this modern dispensation
must adequately empower them and create an atmosphere for growth by employing
every available tools ranging from cultural orientations and beliefs and
appropriate leadership styles. Due to rising citizens’ discontent over public
service delivery, cultural changes, globalisation, and new technological
challenges, organisations everywhere in the world are seeking means of
improving their performance. One of the most complex tasks to achieve which may
either promote or hinder organisational goals, growth and development is
centered on the magnitude of work value devoted to effective and efficient
resource management. This theoretical paper explore basic work value dimensions
and their effect on work outcomes in both the private and public sectors in
Nigeria. The attitudinal outcome will allow us to understand whether the public
and private sector organisations vary in their ability to stimulate feelings of
dedication, engagement and involvement in their employees. Theories from
Classical Perspective (Frederick Taylor), Behavioral perspective and
Contingency perspective, content theories, process theories and contemporary
theories were adopted to facilitate a better understanding in areas such as
organisation, structure, management style, and orientation to work. This paper
concluded that modern organisations require a new corporate model based on
ethical practices and human values. Therefore, organisations in Nigeria must
increasingly submit their business processes and operations to align with current
global best practices with focus shifting towards value-based models of growth.
