Employee commitment to an organization is a
demonstration of employee satisfaction with the employer in terms of their
expectations. When an employer meets the expectations of the employee the
employee in turn provides commitment. Despite
the critical role that private universities play in Nigeria’s educational
system, the issue of employee retention and organisational commitment of
academic staff have been a major concern. Thus, with well qualified academic
staff in private universities in Nigeria, most academic staff are not seen to
be committed to their academic activities which had invariably affected the
growth and quality of manpower in society. This study therefore investigated
the influence of employee retention strategies on organisational commitment in
selected private universities in Ogun State, Nigeria.
The population of this study was 1,842 academic staff of six selected private universities in Ogun State. The sample size was 589 and multiple sampling technique was adopted. A structured and validated questionnaire was used for data collection. Findings revealed that employee retention strategies significantly influence affective commitment , continuance commitment and normative commitment of selected private universities in Ogun State, Nigeria. Furthermore, combined effects of work-life balance, work environment, employee compensation, employee training and development, job security significantly influence organisational commitment of selected private universities in Ogun State, Nigeria.
The study concluded that employee retention strategies affect organisational commitment of selected private universities in Ogun State, Nigeria. The study recommends that management of selected private universities should take into consideration the retention factors which impact on the employees’ commitment to the institution and improve on them so as to curb employees’ desires to leave the organisation.
