Research Interest

Topic: Medical And Molecular Virology Research

Description: My research interest is in the field of Medical/molecular virology with sero-molecular epidemiological sentinel surveillance studies cutting across One-health and viruses of public health importance. The research focus is on influenza and other respiratory tract viruses with specialisation in diagnostic and molecular evolutionary analyses by phylogeny, gene mapping, amino acid translation, proteomics including secondary protein structure prediction and molecular docking for drug design/ vaccine production. Also, isolation of viruses for antiviral studies and vaccine adverse events studies.

Current Research

Molecular Epidemiology of Influenza and Other respiratory tract viruses in Lagos, Nigeria

Research Details

Introduction: Nigeria has never been included in the WHO Influenza vaccine development as information on local isolates is not available in the gene bank. This is due to the fact that influenza and Other respiratory tract viruses are under-researched in the country.Aim: To carry out sero-molecular epidemiological and evolutionary studies of influenza and Other respiratory tract viruses in Lagos. Methodology: The research study is an active cross-sectional surveillance of influenza and Other respiratory tract viruses from different study locations including farm settlement, hospitals, rural and urban settings. First, in the 5 divisions of Lagos State. Second Phase: Across the 6 geopolitical zones in Nigeria. Detection analyses is by real-time reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction rRT-PCR on conserved region of the different respiratory tract viruses by multiplex approach. The viral characterisation is being carried out by sub-typing and gene sequencing. The evolutionary study is by phylogenetic analyses with further proteomics work from gene mapping, and amino acid translation to protein secondary structure prediction for possible drug design using molecular docking and vaccine production.Expected Results: The results would describe the spectrum of clinico-epidemiological symptoms associated with influenza and Other respiratory tract viruses and assist in prevention strategies.Contribution to knowledge: The study would contribute to knowledge as local strains of Influenza and Other respiratory tract viruses including Respiratory Syncytial Virus RSV, Bocavirus, parainfluenza virus, and others driving epidemics in this region, their pattern of mutation and evolution will be understood. Information obtained on the circulating strains would be deposited at the gene bank to provide data on the local subtypes in the country which will assist in the area of diagnostics and vaccine development.
