Changes in career aspirations among medical students of the Lagos state university
Introduction: Medical students have been known to show interest in various specialties of medicine based on several factors including preconceived desires, influence of medical teachers and experiences in medical school. A baseline study conducted among the same set of students at 200 level revealed that surgery was the most attractive specialty to the students and personal love and interest were the major attractions responsible for this choice. Methods: The study was prospective in design. The same students who responded to the 200 level questions also received the self-administered questionnaires in 600 level, with some loss to attrition as not all the students had crossed over to the final year class due to several reasons. Results: The results are expected to show the changes that have occurred if any in the choice of specialty by the students and this information will be very useful to the planners of medical programs with a view on how improve student interest across a variety of specialties in the medical profession and encourage student inclinations to embark on specialist training to improve the health system and the standard of care provided at our hospitals.
