Factors Influencing Dropout Amongst Junior Secondary School Students in Education District I of Lagos State, Nigeria
This study examined the factors influencing dropout amongst junior secondary school students in Education District I of Lagos State. Descriptive survey research design and Pearson s Product Moment Correlation statistical tool were adopted for the study. The population of this study comprised all students of the 39 junior secondary schools inLagos stateEducation District I. Four hundred students were selected for the study through simple random sampling technique. Questionnaire was used as the instrument for data collection which was based on factors influencing dropout amongst junior secondary school students. The findings indicated that there is a significant influence of socioeconomic status of parents/guardian on dropout among in junior secondary school students r= .389, N= 400, p & 0.05 ; there is a significant influence of peer group on dropout among junior secondary school students r =. 127, N= 400, p & 0.05 ; there is a significant influence of quality education delivery on dropout among junior secondary school students r = .235, N= 400, p & 0.05 ; and there is a significant influence academic achievement on dropout among junior secondary school students in Education District I of Lagos state r= .338, N= 400, p & 0.05 . The study recommended that parent should provide all support financial and moral to their children, parent should help their children get someone at home to help their children understand the homework better, schools inspection and supervision should be intensified to increase efficiency and quality in the educational system, and student should not be expelled or suspended from school but rather given them normal punishment and advising/talking to them.
