Topic: The Use Sporting Activities To Enhance Students Academic Achievement, Critical Thinking And Problem Solving Ability In Physics

Description: The contribution of physics to the economic and technological development of countries cannot be over emphasised. In spite of this, students poor performance in this subject has been worrisome and this is a source of worry to stakeholders. The use of appropriate teaching methods which place emphasis on thinking, understanding and students effective and maximum learning is critical to the successful teaching and learning of physics has been identified. These methodsplace emphasis on critical thinking, understanding and students effective and maximum learning. They engage students in meaningful learning and improve their ability to demonstrate a good understanding of the basic concepts of the subject. The focus of my current research interest is the use of sporting activities to enhance students achievement, critical thinking and interest in the physics. Emerging literature revealed that sporting activities play important roles in human life today and in past. Sporting activities can be applied to teach physics concepts for easy understanding by the students. They are student-oriented because they offer hands-on engagements to students in learning physics and students engagement in sporting activities has a positive academic performance. With the use of sporting activities, students interest and problem solving ability including enrolment of students into the course at tertiary level will improve drastically.

Current Research

Development and Use of Learning Management System and Its Effect on Learning Outcomes of Secondary School Physics Students in South-West Nigeria

Research Details

The long-standing problem of insufficient trained and certified physics teachers has remained unresolved. Undoubtedly, this problem has led to poor perception of physics with very low and unsatisfactory academic achievement among senior secondary school students. The study will adopt a quasi-experimental design which involves the development of long-term intervention of LMS . It involves two types of participants the secondary school physics teachers and senior secondary I SS1 students who are relatively new to physics concepts. The five senior secondary school physics teachers who shall be extracted from government owned secondary schools will be selected through purposive sampling technique across the six states in south-west geo-political zone of Nigeria. The selection will be premised on well-defined criteria such as academic qualification, measure of competence, and the track record of performance in teaching physics over the years. The second category of participants, who are senior secondary school physics students will also be selected through purposive sampling technique based on simple criteria of possession of National Identification Number NIN and access to internet enabled devices. These sampled students shall be enrolled on the LMS after completion. An estimated number of one hundred physics students will be assigned for both the experimental and control groups in each of the six states involve in the study. Two instruments will be deployed for the study. Firstly, Physics Teachers Competence Scale on Learning Management System PHYTEC-SCALEMS will be used to measure the participating teachers skills on the use of LMS and the associated variables. Secondly, the physics students will be subjected to Physics Achievement Test PAT on selected topics among the perceived difficult topics in physics. Both instruments will be administered pre and post intervention.Obtained data will be analyzed using the appropriate descriptive statistical tools and inferential statistics of Analysis of Covariance implemented in Jamovi Software Version 2.2.3.
