Current Research

Heavy Metal Contamination in Environmental Matrices and Plant Biodiversity in Lagos Dumpsite, Nigeria

Research Details

Rapid urbanization in Lagos, Nigeria, has resulted in uncontrolled dumpsites in many locations

within the city, notably the Igando, indiscriminate disposal of municipal and electronic waste

could pose a serious health concerns to the resident, this study investigated level of exposure to toxic heavy metal in soil, water and plants in and around the dumpsite to evaluate health effect to the residents. Soil, groundwater and plant samples were collected and analyzed using ICP-OES, plants biodiversity in the study area were identified, indexed with voucher numbers and kept in herbarium for further reference. The findings from the study discovered that the concentrations of Pb (0.773mg/L), Cd, (0.005 mg/L) Ni (0.367mg/L) and Hg (0.011mg/L) in the samples exceeded WHO permissible limits. Pollution indices as determined by this study indicated moderate to severe contamination in several locations within the site. Health risk assessment showed that the residents are at risk of non-carcinogenic and carcinogenic effects. According to this study, the Igando dumpsite environment is contaminated with toxic heavy metals and a threat to human health and the ecosystem. This study recommends bioremediation solution, waste management regulations should be enforced, and provision of safe drinking water is recommended.
