EVALUATION OF THE BIOCHEMICAL EFFECT OF AQUEOUS LEAF EXTRACT OF BASELLA ALBA ON WISTAR RATS FED WITH BOUILLON CUBE
This study evaluates the ameliorating effect of the aqueous extract of Basella alba using OECD guidelines on oral toxicity. The combined effects of bouillon cubes and Basella alba on biochemical and oxidative stress parameters in adult male Wistar rats for 21 days were investigated. The phytochemical analysis shows that Basella alba contains phenols 33.26 0.23 mg/100g , tannins 24.19 0.17 mg/100g , and flavonoids 30.70 0.27 mg/100g , all of which contribute to its antioxidant properties. The adult Wistar rats were divided into four groups: control CG , bouillon cubes BC , Basella Alba BA , and a combination of bouillon cubes and Basella alba BC + BA . Alkaline phosphatase ALP , alanine aminotransferase ALT , and oxidative stress markers, including Malondialdehyde MDA and superoxide dismutase SOD , were measured. The BC group showed a significant decrease in ALP 145.1 15.34 U/L, p & 0.05 compared to the control group 256.3 31.51 U/L , BC + BA group exhibited a notable increase 337.2 10.19 U/L, p & 0.001 . Similarly, MDA levels in the BC group 1.35 0.25 mol/ml, p & 0.05 were significantly lower than the control group 2.81 0.27 mol/ml , Basella alba increased MDA levels 2.68 0.36 mol/ml, p & 0.05 . The combination of Basella alba and bouillon cubes had a synergistic effect, enhancing antioxidant enzyme activity. For instance, catalase CAT levels in the BC + BA group 4.28 0.59 mol/ml, p & 0.05 were higher than those in the BC group 3.56 0.52 mol/ml . These results suggest that Basella alba may mitigate some of the negative health effects of bouillon cubes by reducing oxidative stress and improving antioxidant defences. This study highlights the potential of Basella albas could offset the adverse health impacts associated with the consumption of processed additives like bouillon cubes
